Beneath the Surface

Every teen carries a story we can’t always see. Beneath the Surface is a national youth-driven movement using art, story, and community to help us see and support what’s really happening beneath the surface.

What is Beneath the Surface — Origin Story

It began with a single question asked in middle and high school health classes: 'Draw what your anxiety would look like. The answers came back in 1,125 drawings and fragments of truth from teens who felt unseen. Those drawings became The Living Gallery—a visual collection of youth artwork revealing pain, pressure, and hope hidden behind their smiles.

Why It Exists

“We believe that beneath the surface of mental health is the rest of the story—the story teens carry and don’t always show.”

We are facing a youth mental-health crisis unlike anything before. Awareness isn’t enough. Connection saves lives. Behind every statistic is a young person trying to be heard. Beneath the Surface exists to close the gap between what teens feel and what adults see, transforming silence into understanding and awareness into action.

How It's Different

Information → Transformation

Traditional mental-health programs teach information. Beneath the Surface creates transformation.

Curriculum → Connection

Where others rely on curriculum, this movement relies on human connection—through art, storytelling, and lived experience. The Living Gallery allows teen voices to lead.
